Choosing a bed size
- Keep beds no wider than 4 ft if you'll reach in from both sides — you should never need to step into the soil
- A 4×8 ft bed (32 sq ft) fits a meaningful mixed planting without becoming a chore to maintain
- Leave at least 18–24 in of path between beds for a wheelbarrow or kneeling pad
- Vertical crops (pole beans, cucumbers, indeterminate tomatoes) need trellising, not more floor space — plan the trellis footprint, not just the plant's
